Prehnite, Prenite was brought to Europe in 1783 by the Dutch colonel Hendrik von Prehn from the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, the stone was named in his honor.
Due to the variable green color, this stone was considered to be a type of emerald or olivine, it was called ‘Cape Emerald’. The color of prehnite is usually pale green to yellow-green with the addition of white dripstones. Due to the transparency, it is most often suitable for a cabochon, faceted or stepped cut.
Prehnite occurs most often in veins and voids in igneous rocks, often together with zeolites, quartz, copper or calcite.
Prehnite was quite a rare mineral until it was discovered in China and New South Wales, Australia. Other places of occurrence are the Harz Mountains in Lower Saxony, Germany, and Dunbarton in Scotland, where the stone has a beautiful light green color. Another important place of occurrence is Asbestos in Quebec, Canada. Prehnite is also found in the United States in the vicinity of Lake Superior. Other places of occurrence: Austria, France, Namibia, Germany, Poland, South Africa, Italy.
