Description

Lapis lazuli derives its name from the Arabic word 'lazul' blue and from the Latin word 'lapis' stone.

Lapis is not a mineral in the strict sense of the word, it is a rock that contains, among other things, pyrite which gives the rock golden yellow flashes, and calcite, which can be seen as white spots. Gold pyrite and white calcite flecks are able to increase the value of the stone. The finely divided pyrite is indispensable and desirable, and its presence proves that the stone is genuine.

Lapis lazuli can take colors from blue-greenish to blue-violet, the substance that gives the color is admixtures of sulfur. Lapis lazuli occurs most often in the form of large and compact clusters.

Lapis lazuli powder was used in the past to make natural paint, the rock was ground and mixed with oil to obtain the dye: ultramarine "over the sea". In ancient Egypt it was used in religious ceremonies, it was also used for ornamental purposes, fragments of lapis were found in Tutankhamen's tomb. It was also a very popular stone in Mesopotamia and Persia. The Romans and Greeks awarded it as a reward for bravery and heroism, and they also produced jewelry, amulets and talismans. In some churches there are inlays and wall mosaics.

Lapis lazuli was and is a very popular decorative stone, often used to make rings, pendants and necklaces. The most suitable stones are cabochon cut.

Occurrences: Afghanistan, Angola, Burma, Chile, Canada, Pakistan, Russia, the United States, Tajikistan, Italy.

The best quality lapis lazuli is found in the Kokcha River valley in northeastern Afghanistan, probably the deposit was already used by the ancient Egyptians who made their famous scarab amulets. The people of China, on the other hand, made all sorts of art objects from these deposits. Although the deposit has been exploited continuously for over 6,000 years, you can still find beautiful specimens in this place.
