Zoisite, named after the Austrian scientist Sigmund von Zois, who discovered this mineral in the Sau Alpe mountains in Austrian Carinthia.
Zoisite crystals are usually bar or rod-shaped, often longitudinally striated. They usually appear in compact, granular or fibrous clusters. Zoisite occurs as a secondary mineral in the fissures of deep igneous rocks and in the contact zones of limestone rocks.
We distinguish the following varieties of zoisite:
Tanzanite is a blue type, the color of which is caused by the presence of strontium admixtures. Only found in Tanzania.
Thulite is an opaque pink type, the color of which is caused by the presence of manganese, manganese zoisite. It occurs in Sor-Trondelag, Norway.
Anyolite, a green type containing black hornblende infixes and large irregular opaque rubies .
For jewelery purposes, the stones are usually cabochon cut, they are also used for the production of ornaments, beads or cameos.
Occurrences: Zoisite is a very rare mineral, it occurs only in some places on earth: Austria, Norway, Pakistan, South Africa, the United States, and Sweden.
