Aquamarine, the name comes from the Latin 'aqua' meaning water, and 'marina' meaning sea.
Beryl is usually colorless. Aquamarine takes its characteristic blue color from the admixture of iron, and the emerald takes its color due to the presence of chromium and sometimes vanadium.
The solid blue of aquamarine is attractive both for jewelery and for collectors of precious stones. Its shade is well suited to all skin types and harmonizes with precious metals like silver and gold.
Top quality aquamarine should be clear and free of inclusions. Most often, aquamarines are given a stepped or brilliant cut. However, due to the sensitivity of aquamarine to high temperatures, it should be protected from excessive exposure to the sun and heat.
There are many beliefs and legends related to the sea that are associated with this stone. It was said to come from mermaid treasure chests. Sailors often took aquamarine on voyages as talismans to save their ship from disaster. Sometimes the stone is carved with images of Poseidon or Neptune, gods of the sea. When immersed in water, aquamarine is practically invisible. The water in which the stone was immersed was believed for a long time to have healing properties.
