Description

Tourmaline, the name derives from the Sinhala 'turamali' which means multicolored. The variety of the colors of the raspberries makes it a very popular gemstone in antiquity. It is often confused with other minerals. It exhibits the greatest variety of colors than any other gemstone, and each variety of tourmalines has been given individual names.

These include: Achroite, colorless or almost colorless. Very rare and little demand for it. Rubellite, pink to red, sometimes with a tinge of purple. The most valuable ruby color. There are specimens that show the cat's eye effect after giving a cabochon cut. Dravit, yellow-brown to dark brown, the least known variety. Due to the natural color of the earth, it is prescribed to help restore emotional balance and stability. Siberite, occurs in the Urals, color from violet-red to violet-blue. Verdelite, green in all shades. Schorl black, very widespread. Indigolite – a very rare variety with a blue color, almost neon glow. Only small specimens weighing approximately one carat are available. Some cabochon cut specimens produce a beautiful cat's eye effect. It is believed that a unique calm blue helps to relax.

Often times, tourmaline crystals have different colors on both ends, or a different color on the outside or a different color on the inside. Monochrome tourmalines are very rare. Tourmalines are usually found in granite pegmatites, the mineral is also found in sediments adjacent to granites, as well as in shales and gneisses. Tourmaline crystals are usually made of long thin columns, vertically ribbed, ending in pyramidal walls.

Tourmalines are most often suitable for mixed, board and stepped cuts. The cabochon cut is suitable for black tourmalines to emphasize the feline effect.

Tourmaline crystals are very often used to make beautiful jewelry, especially rings and earrings. Tourmaline necklaces, bracelets and figurines are also popular.

Occurrences: Afghanistan, Australia, England, Canada, Bosnia, Brazil, Madagascar, Mexico, Namibia, Germany, Pakistan, Russia, United States, Great Britain, Tajikistan.

Tourmaline in astrology: Western astrology links tourmaline with the zodiac sign of: Libra (pink tourmaline), Capricorn (green tourmaline), and links it with the month of March.
