Description

Amethyst, famous for its royal color, sets the standard of purple shade for other gemstones of that color. This mineral owes its color to the admixture of iron. Amethyst is a very popular gemstone and is the most valued stone of the quartz group.

Dark-colored amethysts are most valued. Amethysts are classified into classes. The darkest specimens are referred to as Siberian, regardless of their actual place of origin.Medium-colored stones are called Uruguayan ones, and the brightest ones with a light color are sometimes called Rose de France, or Bahain.

Amethyst, like other types of quartz, is formed by various processes and is found in many igneous and metamorphic rocks, in particular granites and gneisses, as well as in crumb scales, where it is present in large amounts.

The name amethyst comes from the ancient Greek work amethustos, meaning sober. In ancient times amethyst was considered an amulet against drunkenness. Amethyst was supposed to prevent its owner from getting drunk and therefore sometimes this stone was used to make goblets for wine. In Greek mythology, amethyst was a rock crystal tinged purple with the tears of Dionysus, the god of wine and festivity.

Occurrences: Australia, Mexico, Germany, Madagascar, Uruguay, Canada, Russia, The United States. The best specimens of this stone come from India, Brazil and Sri Lanka. In Poland amethyst occurs in the Kłodzko Valley, the Snieznik Massif, the Izera Mountains and the Karkonosze Mountains.

Amethyst in astrology: Western astrology links amethyst with the zodiac sign of: Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces, with the month of February, and with day of Thursday.
