Description

Peridot as a decorative stone was highly valued already in antiquity. The name of the mineral comes from the Greek 'peridot' unknown.

Peridot is most often granular and forms nest clusters. Single, loose grains of olivine resemble tiny crumbs of green granules. Crystals of a columnar shape are less common. Usually, they are small specimens of peridot, while large, formed peridot crystals are hardly ever seen. In some places, when a few carat stones are found, it is recorded as a great event.

The main source of peridot in ancient times was the small island of Topazos. Hence the original name of this beautiful green stone 'topazus'. In ancient Egypt, peridot were used to make carved talismans, while in the Middle Ages they used peridot to decorate royal and liturgical vestments.

The color of peridot may tum yellow or red under the influence of oxidation.

Peridot crystals are step cut, also suitable for cabochon cut, tile cut, brilliant cut, rosette cut and mixed cut.

Historically, the most important peridot deposits are located on the volcanic island of Zabargad in the Red Sea, 300 km east of Egypt, and have been exploited for 3500 years. In modern times, they are practically depleted. In the United States, it is found in Arizona, Kilbourne Hole, New Maxico and Salt Lake Crater in Hawaii. Other sources are Pyaung in Burma's Mogok Province and Pakistan's southwestern border province. I also perform in Brazil, Norway, in the Kozakova region in the Czech Republic, in the Eifel Mountains in Germany. Other places of occurrence: Australia, China, Eritrea, Kenya, South Africa, Sri Lanca and Tanzania.

Peridot in astrology: Western astrology links peridot with the zodiac sign of Libra and Capricorn, and with the month of September.
