The moonstone is also known as selenite, derived from the Greek 'selene' moon, the name of the Greek goddess of the moon.
In addition to his beauty, ancient cultures prescribed him magical properties. In ancient India it was believed that the moonstone was created by the rays of the moon. While the Romans believed that the appearance of the moonstone changed with the phases of the moon, they also believed that their moon goddess Luna was depicted on each moonstone.
The delightful cat's eye effect in the lunar stone is due to infiltrations and the formation of fibrous clusters. The moonstone is aptly named for its likeness of the moon that reflects sunlight.
One of the characteristics of the moonstone is its variety of colors: brown, colorless, green, gray, pink, white or yellow.
Moonstone is a very popular mineral that is used to make beautiful jewelry, sometimes it is used to carve ornaments, figurines or cameos.
Sri Lanka is the most important producer of this mineral, both in terms of quality and quantity. It is mined by hand, which is a slow and laborious process. Attractive moonstones are also found in India, they are the stones of the highest jewelery value.
