Kyanite, its name comes from the Greek word 'kyanos', meaning blue.
Kyanite is a mineral with a very attractive appearance and is often used in jewelery. The most valued stones are dark blue, light blue and blue-green transparent stones. Most often it is shaped like rectangles with a step cut or oval in a cabochon cut. Can be confused with sapphire, topaz, cordierite, tourmaline and aquamarine
Among other minerals, the stone is characterized by a fairly large range of hardness inside a single specimen, it changes depending on the direction of examination and the mineral wall. The plate-shaped crystals parallel to the elongation have a Mohs hardness of 4 to 5, and a tangential hardness of 7. Due to this feature, the stone is also called disten. Dysten derives its name from the Greek 'di' double and 'sthenos' strength, due to its different hardness in different directions.
The mineral is most often found in metamorphic scales. It comes in the form of granular, acicular, lamellar and radial scars.
Occurrences: Austria, Burma, Brazil, India, Kenya, Finland, Nepal, Poland, Russia, Switzerland, United States.
