Aventurine is a very interesting mineral that was discovered by accident. The mineral is usually dark green with a metallic sheen from ingrown fuchsite or reddish brown to golden brown from hematite plates.
Aventurine is compact and contains a large number of small mica and hematite plaques which give it its characteristic flicker. Interestingly, an imitation of this stone appeared before it was discovered. It happened in the Venetian Murano glassworks, when inadvertently tiny copper filings got into the molten glass mass, causing the effect of exceptional brilliance of the glass. This event was accidental, in Italian per aventura, and therefore the resulting glass product was called aventurine. Only later, when a mineral with a similar appearance was discovered, was it given the same name.
