Amazonite of bluish-green color, noble variety of microcline, is sometimes confused with jade or turquoise of inferior quality. In itself, it is an attractive mineral from which the ancient Egyptians made famous jewelry and ornaments.
Amazonite owes its green color to the presence of lead compounds. Often the spread of astana creates white or yellow plagioclase veins. The most common is the cabochon cut.
The Amazon name for amazonite is misleading. Although the mineral is mined in Brazil, it has never been found near this river. Brazilian legend says that the Amazon Indians gave the people they encountered green stones, but these stones were most likely jadeites, not amazonites.
Amazonite is also sought after by collectors because it forms the largest crystals of any mineral.
The most beautiful varieties of amazonite come from Madagascar and the United States. Crystals found in these places are green or have a dark bluish-green shade, which is the most valued.
Occurrences: Australia, Brazil, India, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Russia, the United States, Zimbabwe.
