The adular moonstone is a type of orthoclase and belongs to the feldspar group.
The magical sheen of the moonstone is caused by the infiltrations of albite and orthoclase, often called schillerization. The luster of the moonstone is mostly blue. When shine comes in many colors, it is referred to as a rainbow moonstone. The delicate play of colors on polished specimens sometimes resembles noble opals, although the colors do not show such great vitality. In order to bring out the best visual qualities, it is given a cabochon cut.
Moonstone is a very popular mineral that is used to make beautiful jewelry, sometimes it is used to carve ornaments, figurines or cameos.
Sri Lanka is the most important producer of this mineral, both in terms of quality and quantity. It is mined by hand, which is a slow and laborious process. Attractive moonstones are also found in India, they are the stones of the highest jewelery value.
In addition to its beauty, ancient cultures prescribed it magical properties. The moonstone is considered in India as a sacred, magical stone. It is also considered, according to some beliefs, to be the moonlight enchanted in the rock, or that it influences dreams, and not who believe that it is a symbol of fertility.
