Description

Emerald, the name comes from the Greek 'smarados' and means a green gem. The emerald is considered the noblest stone of the beryl group.

The emerald has been valued for over a thousand years for its incomparable color. The ancient Egyptians mined it over 3000 BC. The Vedic books mention an emerald, it was worn as a talisman. It was also used to predict the future and protect against evil forces. The Aztec and Inca tribes worshiped the emerald. The ancient Romans linked the emerald to the goddess of love, Venus. In some cultures the vivid emerald green symbolizes spring.

Emeralds are present mostly like other beryllium minerals in granite pegmatites, they also appear in calcareous sediments and mica shales.

The emerald distinguished by its juicy green, owes its color to the admixture of chromium oxides. Apart from the emerald, beryllium appears in the form of many other color varieties that have been used as precious stones since time immemorial: aquamarine, yellow or yellow-green helidor, pink morganite, colorless goshenite, often used as an imitation of a diamond. One of the real rarities is bixbit, gooseberry red. Sometimes beryls have chatoyancy and asterism.

Almost all emeralds have inclusions called jardins. Sometimes even the emeralds with the best color have the most inclusions. The larg number of inclusions and crevices in the emerald make these stones difficult to process, which makes specimens more than 2 carats very expensive. Most often, emeralds are stepped.

Occurrences: Afghanistan, Australia, Austria, Brazil, India, Colombia, Madagascar, Mozambique, Pakistan, Russia, South Africa, United States.

Diamond is the hardest substance found in nature and the most precious gemstone. Its name comes from the Greek word adamas which means invincible, which refers to its hardness and durability. No other stone is as intensely mined and carefully graded as diamond.

Due to the extreme hardness of diamonds, the only substance that can cut and polish them is another diamond.

The diamond is usually in the form of eight-sided crystals, often flattened or, more rarely, in the form of cubes, sometimes with rounded faces.

Diamonds are the most important gemstones, and the weight is given in carats. The word carat comes from the Greek word keration, meaning the seed of the shark.

Occurrences: Angola, Australia, Botswana, Brazil, China, Ghana, Guyana, Guinea, India, Namibia, Russia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe.

Diamond in Astrology: Vedic Astrology links diamond with the planet Venus. Western astrology links diamond with the zodiac sign of: Pisces, with the month of April, and with the day of Saturday.
