Tanzanite is a special type of zoisite. The blue color of tanzanite is caused by the presence of strontium impurities. Tanzanite belongs to a group of extremely expensive precious stones, a very rare mineral.
Zoisite crystals are usually bar or rod-shaped, often longitudinally striated. They usually appear in compact, granular or fibrous clusters. Zoisite occurs as a secondary mineral in the crevices of deep igneous rocks and in the contact zones of limestone rocks.
We distinguish the following varieties of zoisite: Thulite is an opaque pink type, the color of which is caused by the presence of manganese, manganese zoisite. It occurs in Sor-Trondelag, Norway. Anyolite, a green type containing black hornblende infixes and large irregular opaque rubies. For jewelery purposes, the stones are usually cabochon cut, they are also used for the production of ornaments, beads or cameos.
