Natural Citrine, pale yelow is the rarest type of quartz. Its name derives fron the Old French word 'citrin '- yellow, the Greek word 'kitros' - citron and the Latin word 'citrus' - citrus tree.
This stone has been known for thousands of years and is valued for its rarity. The darkest stones are the most valuable. In nature, citrine owes its color to slight contamination with iron compounds. The ancient Romans already used citrine to create beautiful jewelry. Citrine jewelry is valued to this day.
It is possible to confuse citrine with many yellowish precious and ornamental stones, especially apatite, beryllium, orthoclase, yellow topaz and tourmaline.
Natural citrines are difficult to distinguish from artificial ones, although the heating process gives them a reddish hue. Due to the heat sensitivity of these stones, they should not be exposed to excessive heat and sun. The natural combination of citrine and amethyst in one stone, called ametryn, is also popular.
Occurrences: Brazil, France, Madagascar, Poland, Russia, United States. By far the largest amounts of citrine come from the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sol.
Citrine in Astrology: Western astrology links citrine with the zodiac sign of: Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Libra.
