Pyrite has been known since ancient times. The name comes from the Greek 'pyr' fire and refers to the sparks that appear when splitting this mineral. Pyrite was used to make fires in prehistoric times.
In Greece, it was considered to have healing properties and therefore was worn as an amulet. The Incas made mirrors from pyrite, pyrite plates perfectly reflect light. It was also called the 'Inca stone' because it was found in tombs. Due to its resemblance to gold, pirite is called cat gold or fool's gold.
Pyrite is common, and anyone will likely recognize the small golden yellow grains and pyrite crystals found in coal that look like gold at first glance. Pyrite often forms well-formed crystals in the form of cubes, octahedrons, dodecahedrons of various shapes. Some pyrites contain admixtures of gold and copper.
Occurrences: England, Australia, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Spain, Japan, Mexico, Germany, Norway, Peru, Russia, South Africa, United States, Switzerland, Sweden, Wales, Italy. The richest deposits of pyrite are found on the Rio Tinto River in Spain. Pyrite-filled fossils are found all over the world.
