Rutile is found as a companion mineral in many igneous rocks as well as in shale, gneiss, metamorphic limestones and quartzites. It is also a secondary mineral resulting from the breakdown of titanium-containing minerals such as titanite and some mica, and can also be found in alluvial deposits and coastal sands. Moreover, in addition to jewelry material, rutile is an important source of titanium, which is used in the production of advanced alloys, porcelain and dental prosthetics.
Rutile has been valued as a gemstone for thousands of years, while black or dark brown stones have traditionally been used in the manufacture of jewelry. The stones are usually polished to show their deep, dark color. It is widely believed that the stone provides peace and forgiveness and helps to strengthen the immune system.
Rutile itself is quite an attractive stone and it gains even more appeal when it comes along with other gemstones. When rutile appears as microscopic inclusions in stones such as tourmaline, ruby or sapphire, it creates wonderful lighting effects such as the cat's eye effect and asterism. Rutile quartz is a quartz with many gold rutile needles that look like golden hair. This very popular stone is also known as Venus hair or Cupid's arrows.
Occurrences: Brazil, United States, Switzerland. In Poland, rutile can be found in Lower Silesia, in the Tatras, Pieniny and Owl Mountains.
